"We do hereby form ourselves into an association for the development of the nobler powers of the mind, the finer feelings of the heart, and for the promotion of friendship and congeniality of feeling."
Philanthropy
The Alpha Nu Chapter of Sigma Chi places a strong emphasis on philanthropy and community service.
Sigma Chi Fight Night
Each fall, the Alpha Nu chapter presents Sigma Chi Fight Night benefitting the Children's Miracle Network. Fight Night is a USA Boxing-regulated, amatuer boxing event that pairs students from various organizations in 3- one minute rounds of boxing. Each boxer is staffed with a professional trainer and medic to insure the participant's safety. This past November, Sigma Chi Fight Night hosted 13 bouts, 1,500 guests and a performance from rapper, Shwayze. The chapter was able to donate $7,000 to the Dell Children's Hospital in Austin, which is a subsidiary hospital of The Children's Miracle Network. The 2010 Sigma Chi Fight Night only guarantees to be bigger and better than last year's spectacular event.
Sigma Chi Round-up
In the spring, the Alpha Nu chapter uses the Interfraternity Council's Annual Round-Up event to donate to another local charity. This year the chapter has decided to donate to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The event is a weekend-long celebration with a crawfish boil and performances from various musicians. Sigma Chi will have performances from Houston rapper, Slim Thug, and Texas country artist, Roger Creager this year. The chapter plans to donate $3,000 to the Relay for Life.
Community Service
Keep Austin Beautiful
The Alpha Nu Chapter participates in a street clean-up four times a year in participation with the Keep Austin Beautiful program. All actives and pledges are required to attend to do the part for the Austin community.
Austin Area Tutoring
Brothers of the Alpha Nu chapter travel to various high schools each week to help with homework, and to discuss with the students about the importance of attending college. Our active chapter believes it is very important to mentor the younger students of the Austin community.
